Slide 1 of 4
Science and Technology, Class 8
Conduction: Heat Through a Solid
How heat travels · Conductors and insulators · Everyday uses
🎯What We Will Understand Today
1
What heat transfer is and in how many ways it happens
2
How molecules pass heat along inside a solid
3
What separates a conductor from an insulator
4
Why conduction capacity differs from material to material
5
How this knowledge is used in the kitchen and in clothing
Experiment
Watch When Each Pin Falls
SET UP
Stick pins along a 20 cm metal strip using drops of candle wax.
REST
Rest the strip at the table's edge with the pins hanging downward.
HEAT
Light a candle and heat one end of the strip only.
WATCH
Watch closely to see which pin falls first and which fall later.
CONCLUDE
Pins falling in order show that heat creeps from one end towards the other.
Presenter notes: Open by asking the class why a steel glass of hot tea burns the fingers. Take two or three answers, then move into the lesson.
