Activity 10.11
Paths of a laser beam through convex and concave lenses
Method
Take a convex lens and a concave lens whose focal lengths you have already found.
Pass a laser beam through each lens in the three ways listed in the table: through the optical centre O, parallel to the principal axis, and through the focus F.
Observe the direction of the beam after it comes out of each lens and write the result in the table.
The direction of a laser beam
Ray diagram
Result (direction of emergent beam)
Through the optical centre O
The beam enters at a slant and passes through O of the convex lens and of the concave lens
Parallel to the principal axis
The beam travels along a line parallel to the principal axis towards each lens
Through focus F
The beam passes through F before reaching the convex lens, and is aimed at F on the far side of the concave lens
