Activity 10.1

Direction of a laser beam entering and leaving water

Method
  • Take a laser beam pointer and a beaker filled more than half with water.
  • If a laser beam pointer is not available, make a ray box by cutting a thin slit in one wall of a cardboard box and putting a bulb inside it.
  • To stop the box from burning due to the heat, switch it off after some time.
  • First, pass the laser beam into the water from the upper side of the beaker and observe the direction of the transmitted beam inside the water.
  • Repeat the same activity from the lower part of the beaker and observe the direction of the beam emerging out of the water.
Discussion
  • Is the direction of the transmitted beam different when it passes from air to water and from water to air?
