Activity 10.3

Verification of laws of refraction of light

Materials
  • A semicircular glass slab
  • A ray box or laser beam pointer
  • A sheet of plain paper
  • A protractor
  • A pencil
Method
  • Draw four quadrants on the plain paper as you used to draw on graph paper.
  • Draw the degree scales in the first and the fourth quadrants using a pencil and a protractor.
  • Place the semicircular glass slab on the paper taking the x-axis as its base, so that the origin lies at the mid-point of its base.
  • Using the ray box or laser beam pointer, pass the light beam through the base plane of the glass slab at different angles of incidence.
  • Each time, measure the angle of incidence and the angle of refraction and fill in their values in the table.
  • Do the necessary calculations and draw an appropriate conclusion.
Ratio of speed of light in air to that in glassAngle of incidence (∠i)Angle of refraction (r) (∠r)sin isin rsin i ÷ sin rResult
speed of light in air ÷ speed of light in medium = (3 × 10⁸) ÷ (2 × 10⁸) = 1.515101.49μ = 1.49
Discussion
  • Conclusion: what do the values of sin i ÷ sin r for the different angles of incidence show?
  • What happens to the light beam when it falls normally on the glass slab?
