A Displacement Time Graph for a Rolling Marble

ObjectiveTo observe the change in the motion of an object
Materials
  • A wooden plank with a flat surface, about 3 m long
  • Some books
  • A marble or a small ball
  • A stopwatch
  • Chalk or a pencil
  • A ruler or a measuring tape
Method
  • Repeat Activity 7.2.
  • Measure the displacement the marble or ball covers in each second and fill it in the table below.
  • Calculate the speed of the marble or ball for each second.
  • Plot the data as a graph, with time on the x-axis and displacement on the y-axis.
  • Work out the slope of the line you have drawn: the slope is the rise divided by the run, that is, slope \( = \dfrac{\Delta s}{\Delta t} \).

Discussion
  • Conclusion: the slope of the line on an s-t graph shows the velocity of the object.
