Inducing a current with a bar magnet and a solenoid

Method
  • Connect a galvanometer to the two ends of the solenoid made earlier, a coil of insulated copper wire wound on a hollow tube.
  • Pass a bar magnet in and out of the hollow part of the solenoid.
  • Keep the bar magnet fixed in front of the solenoid, first with its north pole facing the coil and then with its south pole facing it.
  • Observe the position of the needle of the galvanometer when the north pole and when the south pole of the bar magnet enter the solenoid.
  • Note down the observation in the table.
  • Now move the bar magnet in and out quickly and compare what you see with the earlier observation.

Discussion
  • What is the difference between the new observation and the previous observation that can be observed when the bar magnet is quickly moved in and out?
