Take two syringes of different thicknesses, a saline pipe and water.
Connect the mouths of both syringes with the saline pipe.
Pull out the piston of a syringe and fill it with water. While filling, fill the barrel of the syringe a little more than halfway, leaving space for the piston to move outwards.
Place a weight on top of the small piston and an object with a heavier weight on the other piston. Observe whether the heavier object is lifted.
Increase the weight on top of the larger piston until it becomes equal to the maximum weight that can be lifted by the small piston, so that both pistons remain in a balanced condition.
Write the two weights in the table and find how many times the force on the smaller piston has increased.
The weight placed on the smaller piston (F1)
The weight placed on the larger piston (F2)
Result
Force on smaller piston increases ...... times
Discussion
If a weight is placed on top of the small piston and an object with a heavier weight is placed on the other piston, will the heavier object be lifted?
When both pistons remain balanced, what is the weight necessary on the larger piston?
