Activity 1

Filling a cube from a pyramid

Method
  • Using card paper, make a square based pyramid and a cube that have equal base area and equal height.
  • Make the models so that they can hold sand or flour: leave the base of the pyramid and the top of the cube open.
  • Estimate how many times the pyramid must be filled and poured into the cube to fill the cube completely.
  • Fill the pyramid with sand or flour, pour it into the cube, and count the pourings until the cube is full.
  • Check whether your estimate was correct.
  • Present the conclusion you have drawn to your class.
