Pulling a block up inclined planes of different lengths

Method
  • Take three planks of different lengths, 200 cm, 300 cm and 400 cm.
  • Rest the planks against a place about 60 cm high so that each becomes an inclined plane.
  • Take a small wooden block with a smooth surface, so that its friction with the plank is very low.
  • Using a spring balance, pull the block up each of the three inclined surfaces in turn and record the force needed each time.
  • Enter the data you collect in the table below and calculate the required quantities.

Discussion
  • Why is a sloping plank used when loading goods onto a truck and unloading them from it?
  • Which is easier to climb, a very steep ladder or one that leans more gently, and why?
  • What is the advantage of a winding mountain road?
