Producing and observing waves in water and in a rope
ObjectiveTo observe the motion of the molecules while a wave travels through water
Materials
A tub filled more than half with water
A paper boat
A rope
A piece of ribbon
Method
Let the surface of the water in the tub become still.
Place the paper boat on the water.
Strike the water surface steadily with a finger and create ripples.
Observe the direction the ripples travel in and the motion of the paper boat.
In the same way, tie the piece of ribbon to the rope. Tie one end of the rope to a support and move the other end up and down continuously with your hand.
Observe the direction in which the raised part of the rope moves and the motion of the ribbon.
Discussion
Is the motion of the paper boat the same as the direction in which the ripple moves across the water surface?
Is the motion of the ribbon tied to the rope the same as the direction in which the raised part of the rope moves?
Discuss and write your conclusion.
