Transverse and Longitudinal Waves

Waves carry energy · Two kinds of mechanical wave · v = f × λ

Today's Objectives

🌊

Tell longitudinal and transverse waves apart

📏

Name the crest, trough, compression, rarefaction and amplitude

🧮

Use v = f × λ to find the velocity of a wave

Demonstration
Waves on a Slinky
PUSH
Push the slinky forward and pull it back along its length. The rings bunch and spread as the pattern moves forward.
SHAKE
Now swing the same slinky left and right. This time the wave is built from sideways vibration.
WATCH
Tie a coloured thread and watch it: the thread vibrates in place while only the wave travels on.
COUNT
Time 10 vibrations and work out how many waves form in 1 s to get the frequency.

Presenter notes: Open by asking what happens when a stone falls into a pond. Draw out from the class that the ripple reaches the bank but a floating leaf stays where it is.
