Drop the stone from different heights, for example from the first floor and then the second floor of a building.
Drop the stone in such a way that no downward force is applied by the fingers on the stone, that is, just release the stone from the hand by loosening the fingers.
Tell a friend to record the time taken by the stone to reach the ground using a stopwatch.
Using the data so obtained and the equations of motion h = ut + ½at² and v² = u² + 2ah, calculate the acceleration and the final velocity v of the stone when it hits the ground. While calculating, take the initial velocity of the stone u = 0.
Use a table like the one below for data collection and the necessary calculations.
Data collection
h
t
a = 2h/t²
Average acceleration
v = √(2ah)
Result
First time
a₁ =
= (a₁ + a₂ + a₃) ÷ 3
v₁ = √(2ah₁)
Second time
a₂ =
v₂ = √(2ah₂)
Third time
v₃ = √(2ah₃)
