Lifting a load with fixed, movable and combined pulleys

Method
  • Set up a one wheel fixed pulley, a one wheel movable pulley and a combined pulley system.
  • Using a spring balance, lift the given load with each pulley system turn by turn.
  • Measure with a scale how far the effort had to be pulled to raise the load 20 cm.
  • Collect the data from this activity and fill it in a table like the one below.
Type of pulleyLoad distance (l.d.)Effort distance (e.d.)e.d. ÷ l.d.LoadEffortLoad ÷ EffortWork done = Effort × e.d.Work obtained = Load × l.d.
Discussion
  • Calculate from your data and solve the questions asked below.
  • What is the difference between the pulley shown in the first picture and the pulley shown in the second picture?
  • What is the relation between the ratio of effort distance to load distance and the number of pulleys?
  • In which pulley system is the ratio of load to effort the smallest, and in which is it the largest?
  • In which places have you seen such pulleys being used?
