Activity 9.1

Movement of molecules in hot and cold water

Method
  • Part (a): Pour boiled water, tap water and cold water from the refrigerator into three different beakers.
  • Add an equal amount of food colouring agent or abir into each beaker and observe how the colour mixes.
  • Part (b): Pour lukewarm water, tap water and cold water from the refrigerator into three separate beakers.
  • Immerse the fingers of one hand in the lukewarm water and the fingers of the other hand in the cold water.
  • After a minute, place all the fingers in the beaker filled with tap water.
Discussion
  • If the movement of the colour particles is considered to be the same as the movement of the water molecules, the molecules of which beaker have the fastest movement? Why?
  • Discuss your observation when all the fingers are placed in the tap water.
