Imagine you have to go from your home at point A to your school at point C.
Think about the possible paths. One short path goes straight from A to C. Another path goes from A to a shop at point B and then from B to C.
Walk, or trace with your finger, the path from A through B to C, and find the total distance covered.
Now trace the straight path from A to C and compare the two journeys.
Discussion
(a) When you walk from A to C through B, what is the total distance? Is it equal to, less than or greater than the straight distance AC? Discuss.
(b) Now think about distance and direction together. You went from A to B, and then from there to C. Where did you start walking and where did you finish? Based on your walk, discuss why \( \overrightarrow{AB} + \overrightarrow{BC} = \overrightarrow{AC} \).
