Burning magnesium and testing its ash

Method
  • Hold a piece of magnesium with tongs and burn it in a burner flame.
  • Collect the ash left by the burning magnesium in a test tube.
  • Observe the colour and smell of the ash.
  • Add a little water and shake the test tube.
  • Dip red litmus paper and then blue litmus paper into the solution to test whether it is acidic or basic.
  • Discuss the result in class.
