Lesson 8 · Circle

Equation of Lines Passing through Two Points

Optional MathematicsSubject
8 minEstimated read

Project work: a straight path between two places in school

Method
  • Choose any two places within your school, such as the main gate, the playground, a classroom or the library.
  • Show the two places on graph paper or a cartesian plane as two points with coordinates \( (x_1, y_1) \) and \( (x_2, y_2) \).
  • Calculate the slope of the line joining the two points.
  • Find the equation of the line joining the two points. Write an explanation of how this equation represents the straight path between these places in your school.
  • Suppose the path is moved 5 metres to the right or to the left. Explain what the equation of the new line would be.
  • Decide whether the slopes of the two equations are equal or not. Discuss with your teacher and draw a conclusion.
