Activity 1

Finding the length and breadth of a playground

Method
  • In your group, read the problem: a rectangular playground has an area of 300 m², and its length is 1 m more than twice its breadth.
  • Let the breadth be \( x \) m and write the length in terms of \( x \).
  • Use area = length × breadth to form an equation, and write it in the form \( ax^2 + bx + c = 0 \).
  • Solve the equation by splitting the middle term and factorising.
  • Discuss which root can be a breadth, then find the length and breadth of the playground.
