Nets and Models
Mathematics · Grade 7
What You Will Be Able To Do
📄Draw a correct net for a cube, cuboid, prism, pyramid and cylinder
✅Judge whether a given arrangement will actually fold, and prove it
🔍Hunt down all eleven nets of a cube, systematically rather than by luck
📦Explain why every cardboard box in a shop started life as a net
“
A net is not a picture of a solid. It is the solid itself, lying down. Every face is still there, still the same size, just resting on the table instead of standing up.
Presenter notes: Open with an empty biscuit packet or toothpaste carton and take it apart slowly at the glued seams, without tearing, until it is one flat piece on the desk. Say nothing while you do it. Then hold up the flat card and ask what it is. Somebody will say it is the box, and that is exactly right, and it is the definition of a net arrived at by watching rather than by being told. Keep the flattened carton on the desk all lesson.
