Worked Example 1

Draw the net of a cuboid measuring 5 cm by 3 cm by 2 cm.

Step 1: list the faces in pairsThree pairs: two of 5x3, two of 5x2, and two of 3x2.
Step 2: lay out the beltFour rectangles in a row: 5x3, 5x2, 5x3, 5x2, all sharing the 5 cm edge.
Step 3: add the endsAttach the two 3x2 faces above and below the strip, on opposite sides.
CheckSix faces, matching edges equal in length, no overlaps.
Worked Example 2

Draw the net of a cylinder with radius 7 cm and height 10 cm.

The two circlesTwo circles of radius 7 cm.
The rectangleHeight 10 cm, length = circumference = 2 x 22/7 x 7 = 44 cm.
AssembleA 44 cm by 10 cm rectangle, with a circle touching the top edge and one touching the bottom.
Why the length is not 14The rectangle wraps round the outside, not straight across, so it needs the circumference. Test it on a tin: the label is much longer than the tin is wide.
