Activity 1
Comparing \( y = x^2 \) and \( y = (x - 2)^2 \)
Method
Draw the graphs of \( y = x^2 \) and \( y = (x - 2)^2 \) on the same axes, marking the points (-2, 4), (-1, 1), (0, 0), (1, 1), (2, 4) on the first and (0, 4), (1, 1), (2, 0), (3, 1), (4, 4) on the second.
Discuss the questions below with your friends and write down your conclusion.
Discussion
Which quadratic functions are shown in the graph?
Are the graphs of the two quadratic functions the same as each other?
What are the coordinates of the vertices of the first and second quadratic functions?
How many units to the right of the vertex of the first function is the vertex of the second?
Do the coordinates of the corresponding points of the two functions have the same relation as in the previous question?
