Types of Practical Work

Practical work is any activity we do, inside or outside a laboratory, to test an idea or study something real. It is one of the main ways we practise scientific learning.

Why practical work matters

Reading about science tells us what other people have already found out. Practical work lets us find things out for ourselves. When we do practical work, we can check whether an idea is true, watch something happen with our own eyes, and collect real information instead of just trusting what a book says. This is why practical work has such an important place in science.

Here is the difference put simply. A book can tell you that ice floats on water. You can read that sentence, believe it, and repeat it in an exam, without ever having seen it happen. But drop a real ice cube into a real glass of water, and now you have seen it float with your own eyes. You also start noticing things the sentence never mentioned: how much of the cube sits below the surface, how it slowly spins, how the water level changes as it melts. Practical work does not just confirm what you read. It usually shows you more than you were looking for.

The five types of practical work

Not all practical work looks the same. Depending on what we are trying to find out, practical work usually falls into one of five types.

Observation work

We watch something closely and note what we see, without changing anything. Example: watching how ants carry food.

Testing work

We change one thing on purpose and see what happens, to check if an idea is true. Example: heating water to see when it boils.

Survey work

We collect information from many people or many places and then study it together. Example: asking classmates what they eat for breakfast.

Project work

We plan and carry out a bigger piece of work over several days, then share what we found. Example: studying how clean a nearby stream is.

Model-building work

We build a physical copy of something to understand it better or to show it to others. Example: building a model of the solar system.

Seeing each type in action

A one-line description of each type is easy to forget. Watching what each one actually looks like in practice is much easier to remember, so here is each type as a real piece of work.

Observation work. A student sits near an ant trail for twenty minutes with a notebook. She records how many ants pass in each direction, what each one is carrying, and where the trail leads. She adds no food, blocks no path, and touches nothing. At the end she has an accurate picture of what the ants normally do. That last word matters: because she changed nothing, what she recorded is genuinely their normal behaviour, not a reaction to her.

Testing work. A student wants to know whether salt makes water boil faster. He takes two identical pots, puts exactly the same amount of water in each, and heats both on the same flame. The only difference is that one pot has a spoon of salt in it. He times how long each takes to boil. Because everything else was kept the same, any difference in time must be caused by the salt. Keeping everything the same except the one thing you are testing is called a fair test, and it is what makes testing work trustworthy.

Survey work. One student asking one friend what time they went to sleep tells you nothing useful. But ask all forty students in the class the same question, write every answer in a table, and a pattern appears that no single answer could show. Perhaps most of the class sleeps after ten o'clock, and the few who sleep earlier are also the ones who say they feel alert in the morning. The power of survey work comes entirely from numbers: one answer is a story, forty answers is evidence.

Project work. A class decides to study a nearby stream. On the first day they walk along it and record what they see. Three days later they collect water at three different points and compare how clear each sample is. On the fifth day they ask families living beside the stream whether it has changed over the years. Finally they write a report with suggestions for keeping it clean. Notice how long this took, and notice that it quietly used three of the other types along the way.

Model-building work. Nobody can stand outside the solar system and look at it, and nobody can watch their own lungs working from the inside. Model-building solves exactly this problem. Painted balls hung at different distances become a solar system you can walk around and point at. Two balloons inside a cut plastic bottle become a pair of lungs you can actually make breathe by pulling on the bottom. A good model turns something impossible to see into something you can hold.

One question, five different approaches

Here is something that surprises most students. The type of practical work is not decided by the subject you are studying. It is decided by the method you choose. To see this, take a single question, are the plants in our school garden healthy, and answer it five different ways.

Same garden, same question, five completely different pieces of practical work. This is why you cannot classify an activity just by hearing what it is about. You have to ask what the person actually did.

A quick test to tell them apart

When you are unsure which type an activity is, work down this list and stop at the first yes. Did I deliberately change something to see its effect? That is testing. Did I collect the same information from many people or places? That is survey. Did I build a physical copy of something? That is model-building. Did this take several days and end in a report with suggestions? That is project. If the answer to all of those is no, and you simply watched carefully and wrote down what was there, it is observation.

Tip

These five types are not separate boxes that never mix. Many real activities use more than one type at once. Look again at the stream project above: walking along the stream and recording what was there was observation, comparing water clarity from three points was testing, and asking nearby families about changes was a small survey. All three sat inside one project. When an activity mixes types like this, name it by the biggest thing it was, and mention the others inside it.

Common Mistake

A common mix-up is calling any activity a test. Watching something without changing anything is observation work, not testing work. The difference matters, because a report about the two is written differently.

What comes after practical work?

Once practical work is finished, the work is not quite done yet. We still need to write down what we did and what we found, in a clear way that other people can understand and check. This written record is called a report. The next topic explains exactly how to write one.

Reflection

When I compared my table with my friend Bishal's, we agreed on the last two but argued about the first one. He had written survey work for counting the garden plants, because he said he was collecting information from many different plants. That actually made me stop and think, because it is a fair point. In the end our teacher explained the difference: a survey collects answers from many separate sources, usually people, who each give you their own information. Counting plants is really one person looking at one garden and recording what is there, so it stays observation. What I learned is that the label matters less than being able to explain your reason, and that a sensible disagreement is worth having.

Separating salt from salt water (by distillation) is usually done inside a laboratory, because it needs special equipment like a flask, a condenser, and a burner. The other three activities can be done outside a lab, in a garden, at home, or on a field visit.

This is testing work, because the student is changing one thing on purpose (how much sunlight the plant gets) to see what happens to its height.
7Explain the difference between observation work and testing work, using your own example.
Example answer: Watching how many birds visit a tree in one hour is observation work, because nothing is changed. Giving the same tree extra water for a week to see if more birds visit is testing work, because something was changed on purpose.
