Activity 9.1

Compare the density of several things

ObjectiveTo compare the density of various objects.
MaterialsA hollow cuboid box, plastic bags, a balance, sand, dust soil, rice husk and wood dust.
Method1. Measure the inner length, breadth and height of one box and find out its volume. 2. Fill that box with sand, then dust soil, then rice husk, then wood dust, one after another in turn. 3. Pour each one into a separate plastic bag. 4. Measure the mass of each substance with the help of the balance. 5. Now divide the mass of each by its volume, which is the volume of the box, to find out the mass in unit volume, and fill it into the table given.
Discussion and resultThe mass in unit volume of all the substances is not equal. Even though the volume was the same, what might be the reason that the mass of each substance is different? And how much did the density of sand, dust soil, rice husk and wood dust turn out to be?
An orange cuboid box drawn in three dimensions, of the kind used to hold a measured volume of a loose material
