Heat Is a Kind of Energy

  • It gives us the sensation of hotness. Its S.I. unit is the joule
  • The Sun is the main source. Firewood, fossil fuel and heaters are also sources
  • Drying clothes and biskun, warming in winter, taking salt from the sea
  • Give heat to an object and its temperature rises

Presenter notes: Set up three glasses before the lesson: very cold, tap water, and lukewarm. Bring a student out and ask them to order the three by touch. They will do it easily and the class will think this is a trivial lesson. Now swap in three glasses that are all warm, only a few degrees apart, and ask them to do it again. They will hesitate, guess, and probably get it wrong. Do not explain. Say only that their hand just did something and then failed to do something, and that the difference between those two moments is why thermometers were invented.
