Energy Is the Capacity to Do Work

  • Anything from which energy can be obtained is a source of energy
  • Light lets us see, heat keeps the Earth liveable, sound lets us talk
  • Your own energy comes from food, from plants and animals
  • Vehicles and factories run on diesel, petrol, kerosene, coal or electricity

Presenter notes: Ask the class where the energy in their legs came from. Somebody says food. Ask where the food got it. Rice. Ask where the rice got it, and keep going. Sunlight. Now do it again with something that seems completely unrelated: the diesel in the bus that brought them to school. Buried sea creatures, which ate tiny plants, which used sunlight. Tell them you will keep playing this game all lesson and that almost nothing escapes, and ask them to try to think of an energy source that does not lead back to the Sun. Two exist. Leave that as the challenge.
