Presenter notes: Hold up an ordinary stone from outside the classroom and tell them this is the first object in the unit on the earth and the universe. Let the disappointment sit for a second, then explain why. Mars is rock. The moon is rock. Mercury is rock. Almost everything solid in the solar system is rock, so learning to read one is learning the alphabet the whole thing is written in. Then make a promise you will keep at the end of the period: by then they will be able to say why the stone at the very top of Sagarmatha proves that the highest place on Earth used to be the bottom of a sea.
