Learning Objectives
🧪Define an indicator and name the three common ones
📋Read the standard colour table and use it to sort substances
🌺Make a working indicator from a flower, an onion or turmeric
🚫Explain why taste is an indicator we are not allowed to use
Sorting the Kitchen
- Sugar for tea, salt for vegetables, vinegar for pickle, soap for clothes
- Sour things are ACIDS. Bitter or astringent things are BASES
- Salts are tasteless, though common salt itself is salty
- This works in a kitchen. It stops working the moment you leave one
Presenter notes: Set two identical glasses of clear liquid on the desk and tell the class one is lemon water and one is soap water. Ask them to tell you which is which without touching either. They cannot, and let that sit. Then ask how they would find out, and somebody will say taste it, which is exactly where you want them, because the next question is what they would do if the glasses had come out of a chemistry cupboard instead of a kitchen. Say that today is about the tool chemists built to answer a question the eye cannot answer and the tongue must not be asked.
