Symmetry Tessellation

Quick Facts

Lesson: 9: Symmetry and Tessellation
Topic: Tessellation
Domain: Geometry

A shape tessellates if copies of its angles can meet round a point to make exactly 360 degrees. Only three regular polygons manage it, but every triangle and every quadrilateral does.

Study Tip

Before deciding a shape does not tessellate, try turning and flipping the tiles. Most irregular shapes only work when alternate copies are rotated through 180 degrees.
