Two numbers name a point

One number is never enough to say where something is on a flat surface. You need two: how far across, and how far up. Write them in a bracket with the across one first, and you have a coordinate.

You already do this without thinking

A cinema ticket says row H, seat 12. A chessboard square is called e4. In every case it takes two numbers, one for each direction, and everybody understands that swapping them would send you to the wrong place.

The words you need

Word What it means
x-axisThe horizontal line, running across. It carries the first number
y-axisThe vertical line, running up. It carries the second number
OriginWhere the two axes cross. It is (0, 0) and every journey starts there
x-coordinateThe first number in the bracket. How far across from the origin
y-coordinateThe second number. How far up from where you stopped going across
Ordered pairThe two numbers together, in a bracket, in the fixed order (x, y)
The single most common mistake

The point (3, 2) and the point (2, 3) are different places. The phrase to say in your head every time is: along the corridor, then up the stairs. You always walk along before you climb, and x always comes before y.

Plotting a point

To plot (5, 3): start at the origin, count 5 units across to the right, then 3 units straight up. Always start at the origin, never from the last point you plotted.

Points that sit on an axis

A point like (4, 0) has not gone up at all, so it sits on the x-axis. A point like (0, 4) has not gone across, so it sits on the y-axis. Zero is not a missing number here, it is a real instruction that says do not move in that direction.

Distance between two points on a line

If two points have the same y-coordinate, the distance between them is the difference in their x-coordinates. From (2, 5) to (9, 5) is 7 units. If they share an x-coordinate, use the difference in the y-coordinates instead.

Where this leads

Coordinates are the bridge between geometry and algebra. Once a point is a pair of numbers, a shape becomes a list of pairs and a line becomes a rule connecting x to y. Every graph you meet later sits on the two axes you are learning to use now.

Worked Example 1

Plot A(2, 1), B(6, 1), C(6, 4) and D(2, 4). What shape is ABCD, and what is its area?

Step 1: plot each point from the originPlot each one from the origin, never counting on from the previous point.
Step 2: look at what the coordinates tell youShared y-coordinates mean horizontal lines; shared x-coordinates mean vertical lines. So all four angles are right angles.
Step 3: name the shapeAB = 4 units, AD = 3 units, four right angles: a rectangle.
Step 4: areaArea = 4 x 3 = 12 square units, found by subtracting coordinates rather than measuring.
Worked Example 2

P(1, 3), Q(1, 8) and R(5, 3) are three corners of a rectangle. Find the fourth.

See how the given points relatePQ is vertical, PR is horizontal, and P is the corner where they meet.
Work out the missing cornerS takes its x from R and its y from Q, so S = (5, 8).
Check by plottingSides of 4 and 5, so area 20 square units and perimeter 18 units.

Hidden picture: send a friend a set of coordinates and see what they draw

What you needSquared paper and a partner. Each of you needs a grid numbered 0 to 10 on both axes.
MethodSecretly draw a simple shape using straight lines between grid points, write down its corners as an ordered list, and have your partner plot and join them without seeing the picture.
Then compareCompare the two drawings. If they differ, find the first point where they diverge and work out who made the mistake and what kind it was.

Presenter notes: Open with a problem rather than a definition. Tell the class you have hidden something under one desk and you are going to describe where it is using one number only. Say it is four away. Let them try, and let them fail, and let somebody complain that four away could be in any direction. That complaint is the lesson. Then say four along and two back, and somebody finds it immediately. Two numbers, one for each direction, and they discovered why before you named anything.
