Indices

Quick Facts

Lesson: 23: Indices
Topic: Indices
Domain: Algebra

An index counts how many copies of the base are multiplied together, so 2³ is 8 and not 6. Every index law comes from writing the copies out and counting.

Study Tip

Anything to the power zero is 1, never 0, and a negative index puts the base underneath rather than making the answer negative.
