Activity 1

Multiplying two matrices and comparing AB with BA

Method
  • Study the matrices \( A = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 4 \\ 5 & 6 \end{bmatrix} \) and \( B = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & -3 \\ -2 & -5 \end{bmatrix} \).
  • Write down the order of each matrix.
  • To find AB, multiply the first row of A by the first column of B.
  • Multiply the first row of A by the second column of B.
  • Multiply the second row of A by the first column of B.
  • Multiply the second row of A by the second column of B, and write the four answers in their places.
  • Find BA in the same way, and discuss the questions below with your classmates.
Discussion
  • What are the orders of matrices A and B?
  • How can the matrix formed by multiplying matrix A by matrix B be found?
  • Are AB and BA equal?
