Activity 1

Reversing the arrows of a function

Method
  • Draw the arrow diagram of the function f(x): A → B = {(1, 0), (3, 1), (5, 0), (7, 4)}, where A = {1, 3, 5, 7} and B = {0, 1, -2, 4}.
  • Draw the arrow diagram of the function g(x): X → Y = {(1, 3), (2, 4), (3, 5), (4, 6)}, where X = {1, 2, 3, 4} and Y = {3, 4, 5, 6}.
  • Observe both arrow diagrams, discuss the questions below and draw a conclusion.
Discussion
  • Is a function f(x) defined from set A to set B?
  • If the domain and codomain of set A and set B are interchanged, is a function defined?
  • Is a function g(x) defined from set X to set Y?
  • If the domain and range of set X and set Y are interchanged, is a function defined?
